5 Simple steps to Change your Car oil
You love your car and maintain it with the utmost care. Your car is a perfect combination of different components, and one of the most vital parts is the “Engine”.
Car oil is the blood that pumps through the heart of your car, so it becomes essential to check on the car’s oil and change it as soon as you notice any abnormal signs.
Regularly changing your car’s engine oil is one of the most important things you can do to keep your car in good condition to run smoothly. Over time, the oil deteriorates, the filter gets jammed with dust, and your car’s engine will demand an oil change to function properly.
You can easily check and change your car oil by yourself by following a few simple steps. The car oil change is absolutely convenient, cost effective and can be done in a few minutes.
5 Simple steps for a car oil change
Before you start the process of changing the car oil, you should check your owner’s manual to see what type and amount of oil you need.Synthetic oils are mostly recommended by the manufacturers, but still, check if the owner’s manual lists any other specific oil requirements described by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Lubricant Standards and Approval Committee (ILSAC).
In addition to oil, you will need an oil filter, an oil filter wrench, a wrench to remove the drain plug, a funnel, and a drain pan.You may also need a jack and safety stand or a custom steel ramp to jack up your vehicle to gain access, and as a safety measure, you will need rubber hand gloves to protect your hand.
Jack up your car
Firstly, make sure your car oil is cool or may be warm, but never hot.Start changing the oil 10-15 minutes after the drive so that your car’s engine has time to cool and get ready for the oil changing process.
To start with, park your car on a plain surface on the ground level and jack up your car to reach the oil drain plug. You can jack up your car using a jack stand, hoist, or steel ramp, and make sure you’re completely safe. Your car can be jacked up to about 18 inches off the ground, giving you plenty of room to work under the car. Also, be careful when you work under the car as it is supported only by a jack. There is a chance, although rare, of a car rolling off while you work. So put a wheel chock, piece of wood, or another wheel block behind the rear wheel to hold the car in place.
If you are not sure of the location of your vehicle’s jacking points, refer to your owner’s manual for more information.
Before moving on to the next step check if there are any oil leaks. If you notice any leaks, we recommend you have your car checked by a mechanic.
Keep dirty oil away from your car engine
Open the car’s hood and remove the engine cover and oil fill cap. This allows the oil to drain smoothly with the help of airflow. Get underneath the car and place the oil drain pan right under the engine drain plug. The oil pan should be big enough to hold at least twice as much oil as the engine has, so as to prevent the oil from spilling out of the pan.
Then, loosen the drain plug bolt with a wrench.Unscrew the bolt completely and pull it out to let the oil flow out fully. Don’t forget to keep the bolt in a careful place, as you need to reuse it. To avoid the oil messing up your hands, wear gloves. Wait for a few minutes to drain the oil entirely, as it may take some time for slugged oil to flow out.
Get rid of the old filter
The next step is to change the old oil filter. Loosen and unscrew the filter cap with a wrench and then twist it in the counterclockwise direction. While loosening the filter the oil drops will drain out, make sure you keep the drain pan still under the car to catch any spilled oil. Slowly lift the filter with a cloth or tissue to hold the drops. And then pull out the old filter cartridge and old O ring from the cap and clean the filter with a piece of cloth. After cleaning the filter cap, insert the new old O ring and new filter cartridge into the filter cap. Clean the oil residue from the filter housing, replace the changed new filter, and screw the cap tightly.
Fuel your engine with new and lubricant oil
It’s time to add new oil to your car
Before, adding the new oil, clean the oil residue from the drain plug area and plug in the bolt and tighten it. The need for a drain pan is done, so you can take out the drain pan from underneath. And it’s the right time to change the new car oil, remove the oil cap and pour the oil as per the requirement of your car if you pour more than the prescribed level, you need to remove it and remember that you should add the oil one quarts less than the required level. After adding the new oil, replace the oil cap and screw it tightly, and keep the engine on for a few minutes and check if there are any leaks.
Check the Oil Level
The final step after adding the car oil is to check the car oil. To check the oil level, pull out the dipstick from the engine and wipe the dipstick, and then insert the dipstick again in the tube and notice the level of the oil. If the oil level is below L, add some more oil, and if it is in between the low level indicated by L and the high level indicated by H you’ve done a perfect job. Finally, replace the engine cover and close the hood.
